The Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, had among its entries a short feature directed by a former Hollister resident.

“Night Light,” directed by Eric Escobar, relates how a 10-year-old boy fascinated by astronomy finally gets to see the stars without light pollution obscuring his view.

The film was also shown recently at the Fayetteville Film Fest and was well-received.

Escobar was known as Eric Myer when he lived In Hollister in the 1980s. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, he produced documentaries for his alma mater’s African-American Studies Department for five years.

“Night Light” was shown at the Arizona International Film Festival in Tucson last year.

Escobar spoke at Pima Community College in April on the topic, “Brave New Digital World.” He has also spoken at seminars in the Bay Area.

Coincidentally, he met his former Hollister next-door neighbor in Park City and learned that she had a film being shown in the Nodance Film Festival, just down the block from Sundance.

“We were each surprised that the other had a film entered and that their names are similar; his is ‘Night Light’ and mine’s ‘Night Patrol,'” said Andrea Ureno, Escobar’s former neighbor whose video was shown to an enthusiastic audience at Nodance.

“We talked a little about our families and recalled some of the fun we had when we both lived on Fourth Street,” Ureno said. “He told me that he has been doing much camerawork and is becoming proficient at editing. It was quite a recognition of his talent to be invited to Sundance because the competition is so great.”

Escobar lives in Oakland and shoots films at night and on weekends.
