A two-vehicle accident this morning sent five Hollister residents to the hospital, three with minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Armando Bias, 37, an unidentified 31-year-old female and one of her three children were taken by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital, the CHP said. The other children were later taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
All were involved in an accident that occurred at 7:55 a.m. at the intersection of Sunnyslope and Fairview roads. The woman was reportedly driving a Dodge Caravan and was trying to pull out onto northbound Fairview from Sunnyslope. Bias was traveling southbound on Fairview in an oversized Dodge van, CHP Officer Rich Corona said. The cars collided and the Caravan rolled onto its right side.
The accident blocked the northbound lane of Fairview for almost an hour as officers directed the morning commuter traffic. The vehicles were being towed from the scene by 8:40 a.m.
“She pulled out right in front of him. She didn’t even see the guy (Bias),” Corona said. “The guy put on his brakes but couldn’t stop in time.”
Traveling in the Caravan were the mother and her three children, one 3 years old and the other two age 4, according to CHP Officer Tom Hester.
One child was put on a backboard and taken to Hazel Hawkins and the other two were taken to the hospital “to be checked out,” Corona said. All the children were in car seats, Hester said.
Bias was wearing his seat belt and it appeared the woman was also wearing hers, Corona said. He also said it looked like the woman was taking her children to school, but he could not be sure.
One fire truck from the California Department of Forestry and two ambulances responded to the scene.
