A Hollister man was killed in a motorcycle accident at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area when he veered off a trail and crashed into a tree.

Frank Ramirez Sanchez, 67, died Thursday of a severe chest injury, according to Sgt. Wes Walker of the San Benito County Sheriff/Coroner’s Office. There were no witnesses to the accident, and Walker said the department does not suspect foul play.

Park rangers arrived and performed CPR on Sanchez, who had landed in a ravine. He died at the scene, according to Dan Dungy, district superintendent at Hollister Hills.

“It’s a really tragic event,” Dungy said.

Dungy said fatal accidents at Hollister Hills are “pretty rare.” He did not have official figures, but he said the most recent fatal accident occurred three years ago.

Sanchez, an off-road vehicle enthusiast, had been riding with a friend and the friend’s son, Walker said. He added that the events preceding the accident are unclear at this point, and Sanchez’s riding companions “were not actually there” when Sanchez lost control of his motorcycle.

Sanchez, who moved to Hollister in 1995, had been a member of the American Motorcycle Association since 1957. He is survived by his wife, Cruz , and eight children.
