The San Benito County Board of Supervisors is looking for volunteers to join a committee to address the controversial growth-related issue of Transfer of Development Credits.

More commonly known as TDCs, a Transfer of Development Credits program, if properly designed, could be an effective tool to help ease the continued pressure for more residential housing.

Every property owner has the right to build on their property as long as they abide by county or city planning ordinances. TDCs are part of a concept that allows developers to essentially purchase the right to build on another property owner’s land. The developer can then transfer the right to build and apply it to a subdivision project.

Because the property owner has sold the right to build on his property, he can never build another house or home or subdivision on his land.

Volunteer members of the Transfer of Development Credits Citizens Advisory-Study Group will have a hand in shaping the TDC program to fit local needs.

Anyone interested in volunteering can obtain a standard membership application at the county administrative office, 481 Fourth St., or at the county planning department, 3224 Southside Road. Applications, along with a resume, must be completed and returned to either office by 5 p.m. May 27.
