An estimated 350 youths in search of summer jobs browsed booths, filled out applications and spoke with local and regional employers Thursday at the Youth Job Fair.

Attendance at the second annual event was up by about 100, according to Shelly Donati, coordinator of the San Benito County School-To-Career Program, the event’s chief sponsor.

“A couple of things go into that (the increase),” Donati said. “It’s the second year we’re having it, so people are more familiar with it. Also, there were more employers; we had almost 40 this year. That’s more than double what we had last year.”

Last year’s inaugural event was held in June, which led local employers seeking youths to fill summer job openings to ask that the event be held earlier, Donati said. Many employers begin their summer staffing process before summer vacation begins, she said.

Local businesses with booths at the job fair, on the lawn at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets, included Premiere Cinemas, Milgard Windows, Target and Bonfante Gardens. Recruiters from the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard were also on hand.

The event was sponsored by nine different agencies, including the Youth Employment Opportunity Program, the One-Stop Career Center and the county Office of Education.
