A Hollister woman sustained minor injuries when her car ran off Cienega Road and rolled over after she swerved to avoid hitting a deer Wednesday.

Shari Hutchison, 51, of Hollister was taken to Hazel Hawkins Hospital where she was treated for some minor scrapes and bruises, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 6 a.m. accident happened when Hutchison was northbound on Cienega Road just north of the Grass Valley Road intersection in a 2001 Kia coupe traveling at an unknown rate of speed, the CHP said.

While she was driving, Hutchison looked down at her compact disc player and when she looked up a moment later, she reportedly saw a deer running across the road directly in front of her car, the CHP said.

Hutchison veered to her right to avoid hitting the deer and ended up running onto the gravel shoulder of the road. Trying to regain her place on the road, Hutchison overcorrected her steering to the left and shot across the opposing lane, losing control of her car, the CHP said.

With the Kia traveling out of control, the car struck a hillside on the western side of Cienega Road and overturned and skidded to a stop in the southbound lane on its left side, the CHP said.

Hutchison was not cited or arrested for the accident, and crash investigators said that nether alcohol nor drugs appear to have played a role in the accident.
