Nonprofit organizations in San Benito County planning to provide services to prevent child abuse are eligible for $58,000 and must submit proposals by June 16.
The funding, which can include multiple grants, has been made available to the county Child Welfare Commission from the California Department of Social Services.
Interested organizations are not required to submit an official application. Rather, a detailed proposal – including services to be provided, cost-per-unit of service and total costs – is necessary.
The Commission, which has also doled out the state-allocated funding in previous years, has identified three types of services needed in the county to be funded by the grants. They include respite care, parent education and counseling. Last year, Chamberlain’s Children’s Center received all of the funding.
“We’re really open to any proposals that come in,” said Marilyn Coppola of the Commission.
Respite care is for children in abusive situations, for which $30,000 will be allocated. Respite care funding will be restricted to licensed foster-care agencies.
The remaining $28,000 will go to parent education classes and counseling services and can be awarded to “any community based organization,” Coppola said.
Parent education includes classes, for which $19,000 will be allocated. Counseling services will receive $9,000.
The Commission, which oversees child abuse prevention for the county, will be examining the proposals.
