Hollister firefighters were called out to the Winn Insurance
Building on Fifth Street at about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Hollister Fire Chief Bill Garringer said the incident started
when a workman who was installing an air conditioning unit on the
roof was soldering some pipe.

Hollister Fire Chief Bill Garringer said the incident started when a workman who was installing an air conditioning unit on the roof was soldering some pipe.
The workman was using a block of wood to hold part of the pipe in place when heat from a soldering device burned some of the wood. Smoke from the burned wood filtered into the building’s ventilation system.
“At first, it took us a few minutes to pinpoint exactly what was wrong,” Garringer said.
He said if nothing else he could look at it like a good training session for the department.
Employees who smelled the smoke called the fire department believing the building was on fire.
