College team meets DeAnza at SBHS Saturday night
The Gavilan College football team slipped to 2-4 on the season after suffering a 30-14 defeat to the College of the Sequoias last weekend in Gilroy.
This Saturday night in their homecoming game against the DeAnza Dons, the Rams will try to bounce back from their loss to the Giants. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at San Benito High School-a rare venue for a Ram home game.
Against the Giants, the Rams scored all of their 14 points in the second quarter-all of them courtesy of the defense.
After trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, the Gavilan defense made things interesting when linebacker Willie Gamboa blitzed Giants’ quarterback Paul Ferreira and sacked him at the 18.
After taking the vicious hit from Gamboa, Ferreira lost the ball on the way down and Adrian Piney picked it up and waltzed into the end zone.
With the score 10-7, the Giants answered the call when running back Jacquez McCray, who had 55 yards rushing on the night, burst into the end zone on a 30-yard scamper, which made the score 17-7.
The Rams defense bit into the lead again, when freshman safety Cameron Shutts intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards for the touchdown.
With the score 17-14, the Rams were right back in it. But it was as close as they would come to victory all night as the offense continued to stall and the defense ran out of magic.
In fact, the Rams offense struggled so bad that Ram Coach John Lango kept mixing things up at quarterback. But it didn’t work.
Russell Schafer managed only 24 passing yards and A.J. Palmer was 2 for 12 for 72 yards and an interception.
In the second half, the Giants tacked on 10 more unanswered points to ice the victory.
Sequoia is now 4-1 on the season.
For the night, Gavilan had a mere 96 yards passing and 105 yards rushing. On the other hand, Sequoia racked up 458 yards of total offense.
The real difference in the game was the outstanding trio of runners the Giants used to perfection all night long. Along with McCray’s solid effort Joe Houck had 84 yards on the ground and a touchdown and Mike Stephens had 82 yards and a touchdown.
