Hooray for Judge Richard Leon of the Washington, D.C. Circuit Court for tossing out the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 4 million acres designated as critical habitat for the freaking red-legged frog. That jumping fool had more room to roam than a tick in deer season. (The frog – not Judge Leon.)
Currently listed in the U.S. as endangered or threatened species are 517 animals and 745 plants with 140 animals listed on the worldwide endangered species list – all nearing the brink of extinction.
Environmentalists fight the battle to protect the red-legged frog and other marvelous creatures, but at what cost? Children should be so lucky.
The federal government allocated $68 million for endangered species habitat conservation in 16 States. That, plus the amount of money Earthjustice spent defending Mark Twain’s beloved Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (even if it is private funding, still) represents a chunk of change that could feed hungry human families or fund a team of experts to find kidnapped or missing children.
That $68 million could help a lot of juveniles get back on track. Better yet, give me the money and I’ll find them critters a home right here at Linda’s Last Chance Ranch.
Point is, we spend our money the way we want to and not necessarily the way we should. Look at how little is spent on education. Without a stable “next generation,” where will America be tomorrow? Is the world ready for the apathetic youth of today who will become the adult child? I don’t believe so, because this generation thinks the world owes them.
Often, the human factor is overlooked in the technical overview when people start saving one species or destroying another.
Stop a bridge from being built for an endangered frog or salamander that “might” live in the area and it’s the working family man who becomes an endangered species.
Clear out the overgrown brush around the chicken coop and you get rid of foxes and coyotes, but then the ground squirrel population increases tenfold. Man’s intervention will always have impacts. There is a balance, so get your finger off the scales.
Evolution is revolution resulting in chaos. Planet Earth vs. the inhabitants: guess who wins.
As long as we keep it simple and believe we are all creatures on this planet – that we need the earth to survive – to preserve the earth for the future of our children, we need to protect mankind.
Extinction is the final word. It is a step in a process that represents evolution, but because the unknown is what man fears the most. He will hang on to the familar and look away because he is afraid of what will be created in place of the red-legged frog. Perhaps three-legged frogs are in the future.
Who knows, maybe one day humans will develop eyes in the back of their heads so they can see it coming – the red-legged frog, evolved to the size of King Kong with a hankering for human legs dunked in pond water.
World hunger, war on terrorism, war on Iraq and the infamous red-legged frog. So can you tell me who is the endangered species?
