HONORS: Nina Singh: Morgan Hill high school student Nina Singh is working on cutting-edge evolutionary biology research at UCLA this summer. At UCLA, Singh will work with Dr. Pamela Yeh to research the evolution of drug resistance in bacteria. They are interested in understanding how we can use drug combinations to slow down the evolution of increased antibiotic resistance and to decrease the likelihood of future evolution of resistance.
The Apprenticeship Program links gifted high school students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds with mentors in the Los Angeles area who advance each participant’s skills through the application of knowledge and exposure to real world experiences.
Students are housed in the dorms at the University of Southern California (USC) and spend their days working under renowned experts who serve as mentors.
Jay Marlowe
Jay Marlowe, of Gilroy, recently received a master’s degree in English language learning at Western Governors University. His master’s thesis, “Peer Pair Collaboration & English Language Learners” received an Award of Excellence.
Zachary Douglass
Army Pvt. Zachary D. Douglass has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
Douglass is the son of William E. Douglass of Morgan Hill and a 2009 graduate of Liberty High School, San Jose.
Alejandro Reyes
Army Pvt. Alejandro D. Reyes has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Reyes is the son of Fatima Diego of Gilroy and a 2012 graduate of Gilroy High School.
Masha Maskell
Masha Maskell participated in the Concordia Language Villages program by attending a two-week youth immersion session at Les Voyageurs, the French Language Village, located near Bemidji, Minn. Maskell is the daughter of Joyce and Jay Maskell, Morgan Hill and will be an 11th-grader at Live Oak High School this fall.
By attending Les Voyageurs, the French Language Village, Maskell experienced a simulated visit to another country. Masha was issued a passport, exchanged currency and adopted a new name. By interacting with staff from all over the world, she learned about opportunities available to those who speak more than one language.
Concordia Language Villages, a program of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., is a recognized leader in global education offering 15 world language programs.
Deborah Santos
Deborah Santos is Gavilan College’s Employee of the Month for May.
Santos is a part-time departmental assistant for the aviation department and has been with Gavilan College since 2012. She has reduced aviation FAA time tracking work from three days per week to two hours per week. She has implemented an accounting and order tracking system that the program needs due to its use of expensive consumables that are complicated to order, and now there is a much better control over the process that has resulted in savings, orders coming in on time and efficient tracking of cost per student for better budget planning.
Santos has also become the conduit for finding student support for aviation students and has put all the available support information in writing so that students can get various needs met. Those efforts have resulted in better retention rates and in a program that now has a waiting list for enrollment. She has also helped market the program through letters to high schools, better communication with aviation organizations and display of materials at air shows.
Michael Ippolito
Air Force Airman 1st Class Michael R. Ippolito graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Ippolito is the son of Jennifer and John Ippolito of Hollister and a 2008 graduate of San Benito High.

Graham Parker Smith was born Aug. 12, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital to Katrina and Stephen Smith of Morgan Hill. He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces.
