John Wesley Pruitt, the son of Buran Bryson and Dolores Ann (Slaughter) Pruitt, was born May 6, 1958, in Borger, Texas. He completed this life on Thursday, August 29, 2013, in San Jose, CA at the age of 55.
In 1972, John moved with his family to Bartlesville, OK. He graduated from Sooner High School in 1976 and then The University of Oklahoma in 1980 with a degree in music education; he went on to earn a Master’s Degree in higher education from OU.
While at The University of Oklahoma he was a proud member of the “Pride of Oklahoma” marching band, earning the title of “Mr. Pride” in his graduating year for his leadership and embodiment of the spirit of the “Pride of Oklahoma” marching band.
John’s career was dedicated to serving students pursuing higher education, from his many years at the Dallas County Community College District as well as Rose State College (Midwest City, OK) and Macomb Community College in Michigan. Most recently John was Vice President of Student Services for Gavilan College in Gilroy, CA.
He is survived by his partner, Colin Heldt; his sister, Lisa Beth Kuntz; his brother, Stephen Wayne Pruitt; as well as nephews Justin, Jared, Jason, Christopher, Steve Jr.; nieces Katie, Cindy and Raegen; and his beloved miniature schnauzers Schroeder and Switzer.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Mark Randall “Randy” Pruitt as well as Randy’s wife, Peggy.
The impact of John’s contributions to this world are everlasting and those that had the pleasure of meeting or being mentored by John will forever remember him for his love, compassion, warmth and spirit.
A lover of gardening, vintage modern design, holidays and all things “Sooner”, John had a passion for life and a smile that would light up a room.
