After a more than five-hour standoff into early Wednesday at a residence on Seventh Street, police from Hollister and Monterey County deployed tear gas into the home, leading to an arrest.

Those were among new details released concerning resident Alex Yanez’s standoff with Hollister police Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Police went into detail on the situation near Dunne Park and downtown Hollister later Wednesday.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Office SWAT responded to a mutual aid request from the Hollister Police Department to serve a search warrant on a residence in the 500 block of Seventh Street, which is near Dunne Park. The SWAT team arrived at the residence around 8 p.m., when Yanez refused to cooperate after multiple attempts to have him leave the residence.

Tear gas was deployed inside the residence after a five-and-a-half-hour standoff. Yanez then started to cooperate around 1:30 a.m. and was taken into custody without further incident.

Yanez was taken to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital after his arrest for treatment of tear gas exposure. He was booked into the county jail for multiple charges, including weapons and drug-related crimes. His bail is set at $91,000.

Greg Harvey, owner of the Joshua Inn Bed & Breakfast at Seventh and West streets, was in Gilroy when the standoff first started.

“We had to close the Inn for the evening,” Harvey said. “We were able to re-enter about 2 a.m. We also had to have two of our guests who had checked in find other lodging for the night. Everything is back to normal today.”
