With three decades of proud service to the Hollister School District, Deputy Superintendent Kip Ward announced he will retire in June at the end of the 2026-27 school year, Hollister School District officials said in a statement.
Ward will retire after 34 years as an educator in San Benito County. He has served as a teacher, Cerra Vista Elementary School Assistant Principal, Ladd Lane Elementary School Principal, District Director of Student Services, Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent and Interim Superintendent.
Ward said he is grateful for his years serving the community, particularly since he was born and raised in Hollister. He said his career has been a privilege.
“It all started when I moved back to Hollister after college graduation,” said Ward, a third-generation local resident. “I started coaching high school football for the Balers, and coaching became a natural transition into substitute teaching.”
His motivation to pursue a career in education from there was a desire to help local youths.
“I never got into education with grandiose plans,” Ward said. “I love kids. I thrive working with young people and motivating them to be their best.”
In recent years, Ward has been a District Administration leader, stepping into the Interim Superintendent role in 2024-25 when Superintendent Erika Sanchez went on medical leave. Ward emphasized his admiration for Sanchez as a leader and coworker.
“I have such deep respect for her on every level. She is always focused on what is best for the students who we serve,” he said.
Ward underscored his fondness for the positive working relationships he built throughout his career and looks forward to finishing strong.
“This is a career that allows us the opportunity to make a significant impact on students,” he said of educators. “It has been my honor to work with so many impressive, dedicated people.”
