In the spirit of the season, I’d like to present my annual
holiday wishes.
Because I am now based in Gilroy, most of my requests for Santa
are for the good folks in the South Valley.

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t wish T.O. a case of cotton mouth, Carmelo Anthony a yellow jersey to commemorate his part in the Knicks-Nuggets fracas and Dennis Erickson a bottle of truth serum so he could honestly explain why he left the University of Idaho football program in a shambles.
But we all know that many who hit the big time have a tendency of losing touch with reality. With that in mind, this column is dedicated to those nearby who have made the local sports scene so much fun for all of us. And here’s wishing the big fella’ in the red and white suit takes good care of the following:
Rich Hammond – If he could get a few players with one-quarter his passion for football, GHS would contend for titles as long as he coaches here. How about a few Vince Giacalone types?
Jason Conrad – Good health. The big guy has well developed skills and is a good teammate, but I confess concern about him making it through the long season.
Armando Gonzalez – A few Hunter Collins clones. The 171-pound junior wrestler is not only a winner but one who has bought into concepts. Freshman Jesse Delgado is starting to look the part.
John Lango – GHS football players who stick. There were no Mustangs who finished last season with Gavilan, and that should never happen.
GHS field hockey team – A new league. Even with 10 seniors departing, this team is too good for the Mission Trail Athletic League.
James Wilkins – How about a pure shooter? The GHS girls’ basketball coach has done a wonderful job with an unheralded group of blue collar-type players. The 7-1 record shows how far defense can carry a team. Now about that shooter …
Robert Guerrero – A ‘roid-free opponent would be nice. The Ghost showed against Eric Aikens what he can do on a big stage against a “clean” opponent.
Jeff Garcia – He has already made some wishes come true with his performances for the Eagles. Now how about another one on Christmas day that will shut up T.O. and further show the NFL that Tony Romo is not the only feel-good story this season.
Alfonso Motagalvan – A platform to show off to the youngsters of Gilroy what can be achieved through diligence and persistence. The University of California-Santa Barbara sophomore is the embodiment of a student-athlete.
To Ana Patejdl and the other coaches at GHS, to Nathan Mixter, Jimmy Durkin, Mark Derry and all my co-workers at South Valley Newspapers, and to all the wonderful people in Gilroy, the happiest of holiday seasons.
