The San Benito High cross country team opened its 2009 campaign
last weekend at the Early Bird Invitational at Salinas’ Toro Park,
where Sergio Alcala and Michelle Duarte led their respective
teams.

The San Benito High cross country team opened its 2009 campaign last weekend at the Early Bird Invitational at Salinas’ Toro Park, where Sergio Alcala and Michelle Duarte led their respective teams.
On the boys side, the junior Alcala clocked a 17:14 to lead the Baler boys, and place 18th among all junior boys. Other top times for San Benito included Said Hernandez (17:17), Omar Vasquez (17:29), Jose Castillo (17:38), Ricardo Esqueda (17:49), Daniel Vasquez (17:54) and Justin Rendon (17:56).
San Benito finished 13th overall among the 35 teams present. Its strongest finish, though, came from the junior class, which was led by Alcala, Castillo and Daniel Vasquez.
The junior took fourth overall.
On the girls side, San Benito earned a 10th place finish overall among 32 teams. Top runners for the Lady Balers included Duarte (20:12), Rachel Shimabukuro (20:50), Dayna Casillas (21:13), Jessica Cook (21:37), Kristina Vasquez (21:41), Cynthia Trujillo (22:04) and Amanda Hill (22:27).
Across the board, each individual class posted strong numbers for the Lady Balers. The freshmen finished fourth overall, the sophomore 13th, the juniors fourth and the seniors third, which were anchored by Duarte and Shimabukuro.
San Benito is scheduled to attend the Chieftain Classic this Saturday at Toro Park. Races will begin at 8 a.m.
