Editor,

I like and respect Randy Logue. I appreciate the civil tone of his recent letter. But the fact is that his religious beliefs blind him to the evidence in favor of evolution. He is entitled to his beliefs. He is not entitled to impose them on others.

But his letter is instructive. Like most religious fundamentalists, he makes much of the gaps in the fossil record. He says not one word about genetics, which gives us a detailed map of how all life, including plant life, is related. And which shows that man’s closest living relatives on Earth are chimpanzees.

Randy is willing to have evolution taught in our schools. He just doesn’t want students to be tested on what they are taught. Very clever. I hadn’t heard that particular ploy before. There is no limit to what the Randy Logues of this world will propose to undermine good science education.

The fundamental issue here is not evolution. It is a blind belief in a world that is less than 10,000 years old, in spite of the overwhelming evidence of a variety of dating techniques.

This world does not need veterinarians whose education is dictated by religious zealots. Or public schools controlled by the same. Sorry, Randy, you and your daughters will just have to fit in as best you can. You are not going to run my schools as long as I have anything to say about it. Send your daughter to Bob Jones University if you don’t like it.
