Boys soccer defeats Calvary Christian 7-2, girls down Marina
5-1
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

Alexis Sicairos, who scored 11 goals total through all of last season, scored three goals Wednesday when the Anzar High boys soccer team easily defeated Calvary Christian 7-2 in the Coastal Athletic League opener in San Juan Bautista.

With only three games under their belt, it’s the Hawks’ first win of the season. The team improves to 1-0 in the CAL, 1-2 overall.

“There was much improvement from that game,” said Anzar head coach Carlos Zepeda, speaking of the Hawks’ previous loss, a 4-0 defeat to Stevenson. “This time we were actually putting the ball in. We still had some problems because we missed a lot of easy shots, but we got better at shooting and better at defending.”

Anzar, which fell just short of earning a Central Coast Section berth last season, returned their second-leading scorer in Sicairos, whose hat trick Wednesday was a welcoming sign.

Teammate Raul Vega added a pair of goals as well, while David Bellone scored another.

Zepeda said the seventh goal was actually knocked in by a Calvary Christian player.

“The first 20 to 25 minutes, we were tied at 1-1,” Zepeda said. “But after that we took over.”

The Hawks scored three more times in the first half and took a commanding 4-1 lead to the break.

Anzar will return to league play on Friday when they visit Marina. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.

Led by two-goal efforts from Jocelyn Sicairos and Michelle Chatley, the Anzar High girls soccer team improved to 2-0 in Coastal Athletic League play on Wednesday when they cruised past Marina 5-1.

Brianna McCain added the fifth goal for the Hawks, which carried a comfortable 3-0 lead to halftime.

“A very nicely played game,” Anzar head coach Albert Flores said. “We were much improved since the first game.”

After failing to record a victory through their first four games in the preseason, Anzar has won two straight in CAL play and sits at 2-0.

As expected, Pacific Collegiate remains right there with the Hawks at 2-0 as well.

Anzar is 2-3-1 overall.

Anzar and Pacific Collegiate will meet next on Wednesday in San Juan Bautista. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
