Students at San Juan School get on the bus after school in 2012.

The Aromas San Juan Unified School District is holding a public hearing to get input for the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan. The so-called LCAP is meant to provide a simple story about goals and budget priorities for the next three school years.
The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. June 4 at San Juan School at 100 Nyland Drive in San Juan Bautista.
The development of LCAPs at school districts across California is part of a new statewide formula called the Local Control Funding Formula, which allocates money to school districts based on the demographic profile of students. Under the new funding formula, additional money will be given for each foster youth, economically disadvantaged youth and English Language Learner in the district.
Within this district, about 61 percent of the students are English language learners, foster youth or qualify for free or reduced priced meals, according to an email from the district’s school board president, Jennifer Colby.
The district already reached out for community input on the LCAP during a district stakeholder meeting in March and through a survey sent home to parents.
From these efforts, the following priorities were identified:
1. Increase access to student counselors and support services
2. Increase elective options in areas such as Spanish, art and music for middle school students
3. Enhanced elective options for high school students
4. Increase access to campus and school resources during after school hours
5. Create music and art programs for K-5 students districtwide
6. Provide access to Chromebooks or iPads instead of textbooks for students in grades 7-12
More community input will be sought at the meeting. Spanish-English translation will be provided.
