The San Juan School construction project was re-awarded Friday during a special meeting of the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District Board of Trustees.

At the Board’s Dec. 3 meeting, trustees approved a $2.59 million base bid from Salinas’ Dilbeck & Sons. Five companies bid on a base project and two alternatives – a bus drop-off and pick-up area and staff parking lot and a parent pick-up and drop-off area and visitor parking lot.

Because of the instability of the state budget, Superintendent Jackie Munoz urged the Board to be conservative and only go forward with the base bid.

“We wanted to play it conservative, but we have enough money for all the projects,” Munoz said.

But, Tombleson, Inc. of Salinas protested the approval. The construction company cited a three-year-old law that requires school districts award a contract to the lowest bidder of the base as well as alternative projects, Munoz said.

Tombleson’s base bid was $2.6 million, with bids of $122,614 and $151,816 for the two alternatives, for an overall price tag of $2.89 million. Dilbeck’s total bid was $3 million.

“We have the money. This is not going to affect any of the other projects,” Munoz said.

At the special meeting, the Board rescinded the original vote and re-voted.

Construction will start over winter break, which began today.

The project at San Juan School includes renovation of all classrooms except for the newer middle-school classes and the gym. The original buildings need handicap access, upgraded bathrooms and more storage space, Munoz said. Also, another kindergarten classroom will be built. Currently, there is one kindergarten classroom on campus.
