The Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars sit just one win away from the championship at the District 1 State Qualifier Tournament in Modesto, where they have defeated their first two opponents by an 18-3 margin.

Although no individual statistics were provided at press time, San Benito defeated O’Keefe 5-3 in their opener, and then beat Escalon 13-0 in the quarterfinals.

“We’ve done very well,” manager Joe Ocampo said. “Teamwork all the way around.”

San Benito will play Manteca Tuesday night in the semifinals at Grace Davis High School in Modesto. First pitch is 8 p.m.

With their second game a blowout, Ocampo said it was his pitching that kept his team afloat in their first round match-up with O’Keefe.

“The first game was very good pitching-wise for both teams,” he said. “We just had a couple more key hits … But pitching is what kept us in it.”

While the 13-year-olds await the state tournament, which starts July 19 in Bakersfield, the 15-year-olds are also vying for a state bid, although no updates were provided at press time.

In Little League, Hollister American A and Hollister National A will battle each other in the semifinals of the 9- and 10-year-old District 9 Tournament on Wednesday at Salinas Atlantic.

American A previously defeated American B 25-9, while National A beat Hartnell 11-0.
