After going undefeated in 2005 with a 20-0 record, the Babe Ruth
A’s had high expectations heading into this season.
This time, they lost one game early on, but it wasn’t enough to
knock them off course. In fact, the A’s answered the adversity by

After going undefeated in 2005 with a 20-0 record, the Babe Ruth A’s had high expectations heading into this season.
This time, they lost one game early on, but it wasn’t enough to knock them off course. In fact, the A’s answered the adversity by ripping off 16 straight wins that culminated with capturing their second league championship in a row.
In all, the champion A’s finished the season with a 19-1 record.
The A’s have been anchored the past two seasons by a strong pitching rotation and outstanding defense. This season, the A’s outscored their opponents 229-59.
The A’s strong pitching staff included high school left-handers Bret Furtado and Anthony Alvarez, and right-handers Chad Whitehead and Justin Terrill.
Prior to the return of these four high school players at mid-season, the A’s received outstanding pitching efforts from 14-year-old Adrian Diaz and 13-year-olds Mark Hurley and Dillon Di Napoli.
In the outfield, 15-year-olders Adrian Perez and Armando Lerma had outstanding seasons and provided strong leadership during the season, especially during the first half of the year, prior to the return of the high school players.
Perez batted nearly .500 on the season and had a solid slugging percentage. Jeff Jones, 14, also had an outstanding season with the bat and wound up the year hitting .400.
The A’s defense received was solid all season long, from third baseman David Alvarez and second baseman Adrian Garcia. But, the real key to the A’s defense the past two seasons has been the outstanding catching of Justin Schlie. Schlie is considered to have one of the most accurate throwing arms in the league.
The A’s also received solid contributions from 13-year-olds, Manny Bueno and Troy Luna, who both had several key hits during the season.
