Nothing feels better than the first win of the year. That’s what the Hollister High boys tennis team experienced Thursday at windy North Salinas as the Balers defeated the Vikings 5-2.

“It feels great,” said Balers coach Allen Barker. “The boys were really excited. With all due respect to North Salinas, we should have beaten them 7-0. I expect a better score when we play them at home on our court.”

Glen Morris dropped the first set 5-7, but came back to handle Daniel Cutter easily at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0.

Michael Blake topped Ty Jordan 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Perry Marks bested James Golden 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Cameron Barker fell at No. 4 singles. 1-6, 1-6.

The Balers No. 1 doubles team of Pablo Andrade and Isidro Trujillo rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vinh Phom and Kenny Rimko.

Mario Zaragoz and Ryan Watson were defeated at No. 2 doubles 6-7, 6-4, 3-6. Patrick Hansen and Eli Contreras were victorious at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 7-5.

The Balers (1-8, 1-4 Tri-County Athletic League) are at Live Oak on Tuesday.
