The Hollister High girls soccer team will travel to San Jose to face Leland (11-5-4) Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs.
The Balers (15-4-2) enter the 12-team tourney as the No. 12 seed, while the Chargers are seeded fifth. Wednesday’s winner advances to the quarterfinals Saturday against fourth-seeded Homestead (9-3-6) at PAL Stadium in San Jose at 10 a.m.
“I thought we would be seeded higher,” said Baler coach Michael Schurig after the seeding meeting.
Schurig was happy about the fact that the Balers, should they win, would meet the Mustangs instead of the Saints of Santa Teresa, the two-time CCS D-I champs and the tournament’s top- seeded team.
“They had all the pairings on an overhead (at the meeting) and it was tiny and hard to see,” said Schurig. “I’m much happier about playing Homestead than Santa Teresa. I just assumed we would play Santa Teresa being the last seed. We have to beat Leland first.”
Live Oak (11-7-2), which won the Tri-County Athletic League, was seeded 9th and will host eighth-seeded Gunn (9-5-5) Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that meets the mighty Saints, a team which has been in and out of the national rankings this season.
The top four teams received a first round bye. St. Francis (15-1-4) was seeded second while Leigh (14-3-2) was seeded third.
