The San Benito golf team finished in second place behind Salinas in the final regular season match at Ridgemark on Thursday.

Salinas won the meet with a score of 190, and San Benito had a 201. Live Oak finished with a 225.

The top six Baler golfers will compete at the Tri-County Athletic League finals on Monday at Quail Ridge Lodge in Carmel Valley. The six teams tee off at noon.

San Benito is in fourth place in the league behind Salinas, Palma and Gilroy.

“I am pleased with everyone’s performance,” said Baler coach Mark Tinder. “I think we will do well on Monday. We don’t have the pressure of a first-place team. I saw more steadiness with the team scores. We didn’t have any big holes or hit any balls out of bounds on Thursday.”

Curtis Rhodes, the lone senior on the team, led the way with a 37 – his best performance of the year. He had one birdie and two bogies while recording pars on the other six holes.

“He has the ability to shoot scores like he did today,” Tinder said. “The question is if Curtis wants to do it. I believe this round shows he can play a steady round and keep his focus for nine holes.”

Zach Zgragen, who is expected to be out about five weeks with a fractured hand bone, was on hand to cheer on his teammates.

Dan Isaacson had a 39 for the Balers, Chris Shackleton shot a 40, Chase Graves had a 42, Jason Allen had a 43 and Wesley Nelson had a 45.

Salinas’ Jason Simonetti had a low of 35.
