Hollister High golf coach Mitch Thomas was “disappointed” with the play of his highly touted club at Monday’s Monterey Bay Invitational at Salinas Golf & Country Club.

The Balers shot a four-player total of 323, which tied them for ninth place.

“We didn’t play very well,” said Thomas. “I don’t know why. We need to come back (today) in the T-CAL match and play better.”

Hollister plays Palma and Live Oak today at Salinas Golf & Country Club. The Balers are 2-0 in three-team matches, but today could be a stiffer test. The Chieftains shot a 315 on Monday, which tied them for third place. De La Salle defeated Serra in a playoff for the tourney title Monday.

John Dempsey led the Balers Monday with a 78, followed by Zach Zgragen’s 79. Ian Hudson shot an 82 while Matt Vigilante carded an 84. Matt Lopez’s 92 was the fifth-lowest Baler score and was discarded.

“There were no excuses,” said Thomas. “If we were going to pick a day to play badly, this was it. But now they count.”

Other Baler sports highlights:

The Hollister High boys tennis team was defeated 5-2 at Palma last Thursday. Glen Morris won at No. 1 singles for the Balers 7-6 (9-6), 6-1. It was Morris’ first victory of the year. The other winner was first-time varsity player Kirk Badger, who won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-4.

The Balers host Salinas today at 3:30 p.m. at the Ridgemark Tennis Center.
