JV volleyball team defeats Alisal in two
There’s not much you can do when you come up against a buzzsaw. Facing a dominant Aptos squad in a non-league match, the San Benito girls’ tennis team suffered a 6-1 road loss Wednesday.

“Aptos is a really good team,” ‘Balers head coach Ed Cecena said. “All four singles players are very strong. They all play tournaments year ’round.”

The ‘Balers’ No. 2 doubles team of Elena Fata and Abby Woods was the visitors’ only winner on the day, prevailing 7-5, 6-4. “It was a really good performance,” Cecena said. “They played really well and beat a pretty decent doubles team.”

San Benito (5-6) lost the other six matches in straight sets, getting skunked 6-0, 6-0 in two of the singles competitions. Rebecca Williams fared the best of the singles players, falling 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot.

The ‘Balers (3-1 TCAL) return to league play when they host Alisal at Ridgemark today at 3:30pm.

JV GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

The San Benito JV girls’ volleyball team ran its winning streak to four matches with a 25-18, 25-15 Tri-County Athletic League defeat of Alisal in Hollister on Wednesday.

Head coach Marlene Villegas said after weeks of practicing communication and teamwork, her team is finally reaping the rewards of its hard work. “Right now, we’re at the top of our game,” she said. “We finally have it all worked out.”

Chelsea Freitas led the way for the ‘Balers (4-0 TCAL) against Alisal, registering six kills, while Brittany Henderson and Danielle Canez both had five. Arielle Rianda had a perfect serving percentage (11-for-11), and libero Shayna Nakata had what Villegas termed “a great passing day; good serve-receive.”

San Benito (8-5) puts its undefeated league record on the line next week with visits to Salinas and Notre Dame. After strong showings against Alvarez and Alisal, Villegas was hopeful her team would continue its winning ways.

“Next week’s going to be a big week because they’ve had great programs in the past,” she said. “We did really well today. We should definitely be ready for next week the way we played this week.”
