Trujillo goes from part-time varsity runner to 112th in state

Isidro Trujillo wrapped up his cross-country season at the California Interscholastic Federation state finals in Fresno last weekend.

Trujillo, the lone San Benito Haybaler runner to qualify for the state meet, finished 112th out of 500 runners. He registered a time of 16:52 in the 3.1-mile run.

“It is a tribute to his hard work that he went from being a part-time varsity runner last year to a league champion and state qualifier this year,” said Haybaler Coach Randy Logue. “He did really well and we are proud of him.”

In the CIF meet Trujillo outpaced all but one of the Central Coast Section runners he faced in the section championships.

With the cross-country season complete, Logue, Trujillo and a bulk of the men and women on cross-country teams are preparing for the upcoming track and field season.

The Haybalers’ track and field program is coming off a league championship season in which 32 athletes qualified for the CCS finals.

San Benito is currently in the hunt for a new pole vault coach and has a partial stipend to offer to anyone willing to take on the task. In recent seasons, the Haybalers pole vault program has been one of resurgence.

A.J. Wojcicki and Mateo Marquez-Conley each pulled the men’s program up by the boot straps and made the event a point-producer during meets. Women’s pole-vaulter Stephanie Starritt, a senior, is the team’s lone superstar.

Anyone interested can call Randy Logue at 637-5831 ext. 283 or fax him at 637-6716. The position has to be filled by Feb. 1.
