The San Benito High School football team is taking the first steps toward getting back to the Central Coast Section championship game.

There are about 160 to 170 players each day who have been attendeding the summer workouts, which wrap up next week.

This is the ninth summer that coach Chris Cameron has been having morning workouts.

“We first started off with about 40 guys,” Cameron said. “But it works out pretty good because there is nothing going on then.”

The turnout is good considering the practices start at 6 a.m. and run Monday through Friday, Cameron said.

The only real conflict is summer school, which begins at 8 a.m. But then students are excused at 7:30 a.m. to get ready.

Players are slowly starting to get in shape but are nowhere near where they will be by the time football season starts, Cameron said.

“We have a long ways to go, but we are slowly moving forward,” Cameron said.

The Balers will be hosting their first annual Team First Football Camp on Friday and Saturday. Teams from Alisal, Lincoln, Leland, Los Lomas and Harbor high schools will all be coming to Hollister.

The teams will be breaking up and will be competing in individual offensive and defensive drills. There will be 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 competitions as well as parimeter and inside runs.

A couple weeks ago, the Balers hosted another camp. This one is just two days instead of three like before. There will be two sessions on Friday and three on Saturday.

About 80 players participated in the freshman fundamental football camp at the start of the summer, Cameron said.

On Tuesday, the Balers will be one of the schools attending the Hoggie Fest competition at Gilroy High, where linemen perform various strenght and conditioning tests.
