prevailed 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 15-6. The win put the Balers
over the .500 mark for the season at 5-4.

We saw glimpses of the excellence I had envisioned this year. I
made some lineup changes.

San Benito was severely tested in its non-league volleyball match at Mt. Pleasant of San Jose Wednesday night, but the Balers prevailed 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 15-6. The win put the Balers over the .500 mark for the season at 5-4.

“I’ll take it,” said Baler head coach Chuck Schallhorn. “We saw glimpses of the excellence I had envisioned this year. I made some lineup changes.”

Melissa Moore led the Balers with 12 kills, six aces and 14 digs. Mallorie Wilson had eight kills, three solo blocks and four assists. Alyssa Fowles chipped in seven kills and 15 digs. Leslie Schipper served the first six points of the fifth game when the Balers jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Schallhorn praised the play of sophomore J.T. Temperino, who was switched to right side.

“J.T. played very well,” Schallhorn said. “She did a good job blocking and had some assists.”

Moore and Fowles were credited by Schallhorn for “superb passing”.

“We’re coming along,” Schallhorn said. “We’re communicating a lot better and trusting each other..”

Stephanie Mauro had 16 assists, while Kathleen McCullough contributed 13 assists.

The Balers are at the Westmont-Saratoga Tournament Saturday, with pool play beginning at Westmont High in San Jose at 8:30 a.m.

JV result: San Benito defeated Mt. Pleasant two games to none. The Baler JV’s took first place in the Silver Division at last weekend’s Notre Dame Tournament, beating St. Francis Central Coast, Santa Cruz and Monte Vista Christian.

Frosh result: Valley Christian defeated San Benito 25-14, 19-25, 15-12. “We were nervous in the first game, but picked it up in the second and third games,” said Baler coach Debbie Fowles, whose club is now 1-1. “Alyssa Ashford was the player-of-the-day with great all-around play. Heather Casillas did a good job of setting.”

Casillas had three aces and two kills.
