Hollister High boys volleyball coach Henke Mao has tinkered and tinkered with his lineup in an attempt to get more production on the outside.
Mao’s latest move was moving 5-foot-5 back row Edward Kauffman to outside hitter, and Mao’s happy with what he has seen out of the leaping Kauffman thus far.
“He’s done a great job,” said Mao. “He’ll be there for awhile. He’s jumping a lot better this year than last.”
The Balers (8-10, 1-4 Tri-County Ahletic League) entertain first-place Live Oak tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Mattson Gym in a rescheduled match from earlier in the regular season.
The Balers are fresh off winning the Brown Division of the Alisal Tournament on Saturday. Considering Hollister was defeated in all three pool play games (vs. Pleasant Valley, San Lorenzo Valley and Branham), winning the Brown Division was a nice consolation prize.
Hollister defeated Seaside in the Brown Division title game 13-15, 15-7, 15-7. The Balers also defeated Mission San Jose 15-11, 16-14 and Palma 15-7, 15-9.
The win over the Chieftains had to feel good after last Friday’s grueling 5-15, 2-15, 15-13, 15-5, 13-15 defeat at Palma, the last game decided by rally scoring.
The Balers won a maddening match last Wednesday at Alisal – 16-14, 14-16, 16-14, 15-13.
“We blocked real well,” said Mao.
Tomas Rebecchi had a team-high 14 kills, while Brannon Wynn had 10 kills. Travis Fowles had eight kills for the Balers.
