The remaining schedule for the Hollister High boys volleyball team is conducive to a strong finish.

The Balers took step one on Friday with a 15-5, 15-13, 17-15 sweep of visiting Seaside at Mattson Gym. Hollister (3-7, 10-13) won’t be going to the Central Coast Section playoffs this season, but the Balers can reach the .500 mark in league play and go over .500 overall with victories at tall and tough Live Oak, then three winnable home matches vs. Alisal, Palma and Salinas.

“I’m happy with the way we played Friday,” said Baler head coach Henke Mao. “We really blocked well tonight with Tomas Rebecchi and Brannon Wynn. Most of our points came off of blocks.”

Playing without defensive specialist Kyle Fowles who was out with an ankle injury, Mao had to return Edward Kauffman to his old DS position.

Up front, it was Peter Prak, Wynn and Rebecchi who did the damage.

“Peter played a smart game,” said Mao of Prak. “He didn’t hit a lot, but he made the big hit at the right time.”

The Balers are at first place Live Oak on Wednesday.
