Playing in their third Tri-County Athletic League Tournament this season, their first since March 10, the San Benito boys golf team took second place for the third time Wednesday when they compiled a 208 and finished behind first-place Palma.

The Chieftains carded a 188 to take the top spot at the Laguna Seca Golf Club in Monterey, where the rains subsided for the TCAL invite.

The ‘Balers edged Salinas’ 211, while Gilroy finished fourth (222), Alisal fifth (242) and Alvarez sixth (255) at the par-36 front nine.

“I’m not content,” coach Sal Felice said. “I feel like we’re good enough to compete with Palma for the TCAL title.

“They’re good, but I think we’re good, too.”

Three Chieftains carded a 1-over 37 to medal the round, while San Benito’s Nathan Winn finished just one stroke behind with a 2-over 38.

Will Cross came in just behind Winn with a 39, Derell Aton shot a 42 and Marcus Synegal carded a 43 for the ‘Balers. Joey Amaral’s 46 rounded out the scoring for San Benito, while Zach Davis finished with a 53.

Felice says “simple mental mistakes” are becoming a problem, as the ‘Baler golfers are perhaps trying to do too much.

“Golf is about learning to minimize your mistakes and capitalize on your opportunities,” Felice said. “Taking it from the range to the golf course.”

San Benito will host the next TCAL Tournament, slated for next Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

JV Note:

On Tuesday, the San Benito junior varsity team compiled a 210 and took first place at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, beating out second-place Palma by a single stroke.

‘Balers Matt Sanchez and Jeff Didomenico each carded a 40 to medal the front nine of the Gabilan Course.

Blake Stephens shot a 42 and Daniel Teples a 43 for San Benito, while Josh Greenwood finished with a 45 and Taylor Weatherly a 56.

Palma’s 211 was good enough for second place, and Gilroy finished in third with a 254.
