The San Benito boys golf team finished sixth out of seven teams at the Los Altos Invitational at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister Monday, compiling a team score of 345.
Mountain View finished first with a 304, and edged Palma’s 305 by one stroke. Los Gatos took third with a 308.
Will Cross led San Benito with an 83 on the par-72 course at San Juan Oaks, with teammate Marcus Synegal carding an 84 for the ‘Balers. Justin Palmquist and Derell Aton rounded out San Benito with matching 89’s.
Coach Sal Felice, however, expects more from his team.
“It’s difficult because we watch them practice and they seem to hit it fine, putt it fine,” he said. “But it’s more of a matter of learning how to take what they practice into what they play – being able to make that crossover.
“When you get under the gun in competition, your nerves tend to get the best out of you.”
San Benito was without Nathan Winn, who was competing in a Northern California Junior Golf Association event.
Carmel and Los Altos finished ahead of San Benito with scores of 317 and 344, respectively, while Sacred Heart took seventh with a 363. Santa Cruz was present for the competition, but competed with only three golfers and failed to record a score.
“This week, we’re gonna see a little more practice time,” Felice said.
San Benito will be off until next Monday when they’ll compete at the Atwater Tournament at Stevenson Ranch.
