Salinas – Marty Bueno and Tyler Ruiz each poured in 15 points apiece and the San Benito boys basketball team defeated Everett Alvarez 72-61 Tuesday in Salinas.

The Haybalers led by as many as 19 points late in the game, and held a somewhat comfortable margin over the host Eagles throughout much of the contest.

Although Alvarez managed to cut into that deficit in the fourth quarter, it still wasn’t enough to overcome the visiting ‘Baler squad.

“We looked OK, except right at the very end, where we looked a little sloppy,” coach John Becerra said. The coach noted, however, that the outcome was already in San Benito’s favor at that point.

The ‘Balers improve to 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League as a result, 13-6 overall.

This was the second game already this season in which the ‘Balers have defeated the Eagles. On Dec. 29, San Benito defeated Alvarez 64-39 to take third place at the Condor Christmas Classic in Castroville.

“I think we played better this time than we did the first time,” Becerra said.

More importantly, there was no letdown for the ‘Balers, who are coming off a big 50-46 victory at home to Gilroy last Saturday.

Along with Bueno and Ruiz, San Benito had four different scorers contribute double-digit figures Tuesday, as Brian Haggett scored 14 points and Kevin Burley added 10.

“We got a lot of layups and we passed the ball pretty well,” assistant coach Dan Quinn said.

San Benito will return home to Mattson Gym Thursday night to host Alisal at 7 p.m.. The Trojans defeated Palma 58-56 Tuesday night at home, and improved to 2-1 in the TCAL, 9-7 overall.

“Every game is important,” Becerra said. “You can’t afford to lose a game.”
