The San Benito track and field team opened the Tri-County Athletic League in strong fashion Thursday, scoring an easy win over Alvarez.
The boys took the meet by a score of 91-35.
Rigo Vasquez had a standout day for the Haybalers. Running at less than a torrid pace as he was getting himself acquainted to the two-mile, he paced the field with a time of 10:10.
“And he didn’t push himself at all,” San Benito boys coach Iran White said.
Ryan Shorey was strong in the 200 meters, setting a personal record with a time of 23.6. Ryan Bartylla also performed well, winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.5.
Four ‘Balers set the pace in the 800 meters also, coming in with a time of 2:10.
“We didn’t do so great in the field events,” White said. “But we’ve got a lot of new people in the field events still finding their pace there.”
The girls were dominant in their victory, but individual results were not available.
San Benito is back in action today at the Saint Francis Carnival Invitational.
“The meet’s kind of expensive, so we’re not doing a whole lot of events,” White said. “But I expect us to be right in the mix with everything.”
The ‘Balers return to league play when they host Salinas at 3:30pm Wednesday.
