The San Benito girls soccer team had to be satisfied with a 2-2 tie against visiting Notre Dame on Wednesday.
The Haybalers were up 2-0 before the Spirits came back to tie the regular season finale.
“It wasn’t the way the girls wanted to end their homecoming game,” said coach Michael Schurig. Notre Dame was fired up, and we just made some mistakes.”
Both Baler goals were scored by junior Rose Vandenberg. She scored one of the goals in the 13th minute on an assist from Brittany Huth and the other in the 46th minute on a pass from Michelle Sanchez.
San Benito was up 2-0 until the 60th minute. San Benito tried to clear the ball out. But it hit one of the Balers in the back, and the Spirits put it in in front of the net. In the 64th minute, Notre Dame scored on a corner kick that the Balers weren’t able to clear.
Mary Von Urff had nine saves for the Balers. The Balers were missing Chantel Guajardo, who had to sit out after a red card in the previous game. Several players, including Vandenberg were also not feeling well.
“Without Chantel in the middle we were hurting,” Schurig said. “But Brittany Lobb did great as well as Brittany Huth in filling in. The tie is not all bad because it shows us some of the things we need to work on to tighten up.”
The Central Coast seeding meeting will be Saturday, and the first playoff game will be Tuesday or Wednesday. The Balers, who finished in second place with a 10-5-5 overall and 6-1-3 TCAL record, will be probably be seeded about 12th going in.
JV Note: The Haybaler JV team finished with an undefeated league season after a 3-0 win over Notre Dame on Wednesday.
Verannice Fornasca had a hat trick, providing the offense for the Balers. San Benito was up 2-0 at the half before Fornasca scored midway through the second half.
The defense was led by Nicole Silviera, Kassie Kearns and Sarah Mullen. Eva Esparza, Brandy Russell, Abbie Ceja and Jessica Liebenberg did a good job helping forwards Vanessa O’Campo, Erika Trujillo and Verannice Fornasco keep the ball on the Notre Dame side of the field. The Balers ended the season at 15-2-2 overall and 10-0 in league.
