Flores scores lone goal in 2-1 loss
Salinas – The San Benito boys soccer team returned to the pitch for the first time since Dec. 13 Tuesday, but couldn’t overcome Everett Alvarez as the Haybalers lost 2-1 in league action.

The loss puts the ‘Balers at 1-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 3-3-2 overall.

Despite the close loss, coach Ben Alvarez said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“For the most part, I am very happy with the way the boys played,” he said. “We were hitting the pole over and over and over, like it was a magnet. It just didn’t go in. It was just one of those things.”

Josh Flores scored the lone goal for San Benito in the 60th minute. However, Alvarez’ Carlos Acevedo and Alex Jaurequi provided just enough goal-scoring ammo to push the Eagles past San Benito.

Although it may have been their first competitive game since early December, coach Alvarez tried to keep his team active during the holidays. Said the coach, “You cannot sit idle for too long, so I kept my boys busy through the two weeks at break.”

San Benito will return home to host North Salinas Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

“We’re only gonna get stronger,” Alvarez said.
