Visiting Spirits deliver sweep to San Benito

Just five days after it posted a four-set victory against rival Gilroy, in which it collected nearly 100 digs, the San Benito girls volleyball team fell flat in a home match on Tuesday to Notre Dame.

The visiting Spirits, behind 15 kills from Mariel Busch, earned a quick three-set (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) victory over the Balers in Tri-County Athletic League action.

San Benito is now 1-3 in the TCAL.

The Balers did counter with 14 digs by Mari Vallejo, 13 digs by Sara Yamasaki and 11 digs each from Jessica Steigelman and Raelynn Heredia. But even then, the Balers could not keep pace with Notre Dame’s front line, which included Omalara Adenuda (6 blocks), Lily Minor (9 kills), Liz Wyrsch and Busch.

“We had a very poor defensive effort,” said San Benito head coach Dean Askanas, who was noticeably frustrated following the match. “They played hard defensively. You saw them hustle some balls down, and we didn’t have enough of that tonight.

“We didn’t have enough spirit. We were flat.”

Katherine Breger led San Benito with 10 kills.
