San Benito shoots 195, finishes behind Palma’s 186 at second
TCAL Tournament of the year
SALINAS
The San Benito High boys golf team finished in the same spot as last week’s Tri-County Athletic League Tournament, but finished far better.
Carding a disappointing 214 at their first TCAL Tournament at the Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas, which tied them for second place with Salinas, the Haybalers returned to their usual form Monday when they compiled a 195 at the Salinas Golf and Country Club.
“Yep,” San Benito head coach Reggie Synegal said, “That’s a lot better.”
The sub-200 score was good enough for sole possession of second – Salinas was third with a 208 – while Palma earned the top spot with their second straight team score of 186.
Chieftain Sergio Rios medaled the par-36 front nine at the Salinas Golf and Country Club with a 2-under 34, while San Benito’s Nathan Winn wasn’t too far behind, recording a 1-under 35 to lead the ‘Balers.
San Benito’s Marcus Synegal followed with a 38, while Will Cross and Joey Amaral each scored matching 39’s. Derell Aton finished his day with a 44, and teammate Blake Stevens rounded out the Haybalers with a 45.
“As a team, the guys pulled together and they played real well together as a team,” Synegal said. “We were proud of what the boys did today as a team. We just need to keep it up.”
Everett Alvarez compiled a 216 to finish fourth, Gilroy carded a 223 and Alisal rounded out the TCAL teams with a 266.
Last week, in a four-player, two-way match with visiting Anzar High at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, the ‘Balers posted a 115 to the Hawks’ 134.
Cross led San Benito with 37, Synegal a 38, Aton shot a 40 and Winn compiled a 42.
