Roundup: Volleyball team rebounds to defeat Alvarez

Despite some close matches, the San Benito High girls tennis team defeated visiting Everett Alvarez by a seemingly comfortable 6-1 margin Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

The Lady Balers are now 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 6-4 overall.

While the final score may suggest otherwise, San Benito and Everett Alvarez had a pair of tight contests at the top two singles spots, but both went the Lady Balers’ way.

San Benito No. 2 singles player Rachel Smith edged Nia Casad 6-7, 7-6 and 11-9, while No. 1 Lady Baler Hayley Barker defeated Christina Wong 3-6, 7-6 and 10-2 in the third-set tiebreaker.

“She came from way behind in the second set,” San Benito head coach Ed Cecena said of Barker. “She was down several match points and managed to hang in there and win.”

Alvarez’s lone victory came at No. 3 singles where Stephanie Rahiri beat Kristina Slavich 7-5, 6-3. San Benito’s Alex Triolo managed to return the favor, however, when she defeated Tiffany Huynh 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.

The doubles pairings fared in favor of San Benito as well. Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum remained undefeated at the No. 1 position when they beat Jessica Vo and Camille Herrera 6-1, 6-0; Erin Glasspool and Audrey Marshall followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carolyn Bautista and Anne Daquingo; and Olivia Diaz and Alex Garcia defeated Khin Mae and Jessica Wong 6-2, 7-6 to round out the doubles teams.

SBHS Girls Volleyball

Sam Klauer had 22 digs for the Lady Balers, which improve to 2-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 10-7 overall.

AHS Cross Country

Anzar’s Aaron Hsia-Coron took the top individual spot in a dual meet with York on Tuesday in Monterey, but the host Falcons managed to defeat the Hawks by a tight 25-33 margin, nonetheless.

Hsia-Coron unofficially clocked a 16:08 at the Laguna Seca course.

On the girls side, Anzar’s Valerie Quezada finished first with an unofficial time of 20:45.

AHS Girls Volleyball

After a decent showing at the Mount Madonna Invitational last weekend, the Anzar High girls volleyball couldn’t continue its strong play Tuesday night against King City, as the visiting Mustangs defeated the Hawks in four games (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13) in San Juan Bautista.

Alex Flores led the Hawks with 14 kills and Camille Merz contributed five. Running its 6-2 offense, Anzar’s Carly Johnson had 13 assists while Sydnee Masuen added eight.

SBHS Girls Golf

Despite carding one of its best scores in recent weeks, the San Benito High girls golf team couldn’t keep pace with visiting Salinas Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister, and lost by a 169-199 margin.

Emiley Palmquist led San Benito with a 48 and LaShea Dailey followed with a 49.

Gavilan Men’s Soccer

The Gavilan College men’s soccer team played well in the second half against visiting Ohlone College Tuesday in Gilroy, but couldn’t make up the three-goal halftime deficit and lost 3-1.
