Ten Hollister High basketball players took part in the Santa Barbara Hoop Camp this past weekend and the Baler contingent went 5-2 against some stiff competition. Playing two 20-minute running halves, the Balers reeled off wins over Wasco, Piedmont, Crespi, Westmont and Santa Maria. The two losses were against Royal of Los Angeles and Lincoln of San Diego.

“The only time we’d play Lincoln would be in the state final,” said Baler head coach David Kaplansky, whose team is now 19-3 for the summer. “It was a great experience for the kids. Everyone contributed.”

The best game of the weekend was in the win over Piedmont of Berkeley. The Balers were down 14 points at the half, but switched to a 1-2-2 zone in the second half and allowed just four points in the final 20 minutes.

“They had a Division I point guard who is going to Stanford or Yale and was getting a lot of attention,” said Kaplansky. “He was breaking us down in the first half. He was a great player.”

The Balers are back at it in the Hartnell College Summer League this Tuesday and Thursday. They went 1-1 last week, losing to Alisal.
