They’ll take it.
After an inconsistent start to their Tri-County Athletic League season, the Haybalers are not about to complain with their 2-2 tie against Palma yesterday.
Just two days after falling 1-0 to Salinas in what amounted to a frustrating debacle, the San Benito boys soccer team rebounded to control much of the game against the visiting Chieftains.
The ‘Balers (3-6-1, 1-4-1 TCAL) were buoyed by the performances of two players just called up from the junior varsity team. San Benito took a 1-0 lead into halftime following Efrain Espinoza’s assist to Omar Bravo.
Though Palma countered with a score when the ‘Balers failed to clear the ball out of its defense, San Benito came right back with what head coach Juan Carlos Martinez called “an awesome goal.”
Awarded a free kick far away from the box, ‘Balers defender Javier Nieto sent the ball flying to the left corner of the net and saw it sail in to give San Benito the lead.
The ‘Balers, in the middle of a four-game homestand, picked up some much-needed momentum heading into the second half of its TCAL season. San Benito hosts North Salinas tomorrow at 10am.
