The San Benito boys soccer couldn’t get any of the bounces that seemed to keep going Monta Vista’s way during the 4-0 home loss Tuesday.
“They out hustled us,” said Baler coach Mike Warner. “We were the better ball handling team, but we didn’t have any good passing routes and we weren’t hustling. We looked totally flat. We just have to go back to the fundamentals.”
The Balers fell behind early on a goal from about 35 yards out by Darryl Tom. The knuckle ball shot surprised goalie Jorge Medina and sailed over his hands and into the top of the net.
The Balers had a couple nice shots early in the first quarter. Monta Vista controlled most of the latter part of the first quarter but was up just 1-0 at the half.
“We’re a two-touch team, and that is exactly what they were trying to do to us,” Warner said.
San Benito had a good chance to score early in the second half, but Monta Vista cleared it and took it the other way for a goal about 10 minutes in to go up 2-0.
“Once we scored that second goal, they kind of let up a little,” said Monta Vista coach Matt Johnstone, whose team is 1-1. “But they are a good physical team. It was a lot closer than 4-0.”
Nick Badell scored a nice goal on a header after a Baler penalty. The final goal was an own goal scored in the final five minutes as it was getting dark.
Kevin Vierra, coming out from cross country, played his first game for the Balers and had a solid game defensively. The Balers were without Jonathan Alouso, who was recovering from a knee injury.
San Benito (2-3) will play Friday at Oak Grove at 7 p.m.
JV Note: Visiting Monta Vista put in the only goal of the day in the 18th minute, defeating the Balers 1-0.
The Balers (2-2-1) had several opportunities in the first half to score. The San Benito defense consistently came up with several big plays in the game.
Midfielder Alfredo Ortega and defenders Christian Mercado, Jose Carlos Vasquez and Alden Wiltse came up big.
The Balers had a much better second half and played more as a team. Well placed shots by Jose Diaz De Leon and Armando Espinoza, fed by forwards Joel Aguilar and Ben Fuentes, were repelled by a good Monta Vista goalie.
“Though we were blanked, all the pieces are there for a very competitive team once league play starts,” said coach Graham Wright.
