The Hollister High softball team moved into second place in the Tri-County Athletic League Wednesday, topping host Live Oak 5-1 at Community Park in Morgan Hill.

The Balers (17-8, 7-4) are a half-game in front of North Salinas (16-6, 6-4), which fell to first place Notre Dame in 11 innings 4-1. The Vikings’ one run snapped a 20-game shutout streak by the Spirits.

The Balers felt rejuvenated offensively with 11 hits, the most they have had in any one game. Their five runs were their second highest for a game this season.

Four players had two hits – Jenny Maheu, Amy Baxter, Liz Stewart and Rachelle Barrientos. Barrientos and Julie Broyer each had doubles.

Shelbi Dillon had a clutch two-run single and also laid down a beautiful potential squeeze bunt in which Stewart was ruled out at home in a close play.

Dani Hernandez (10-5) went the distance for the Balers and gave up just three hits, striking out four and walking one.

“It was nice to see us come up with some hits,” said Baler head coach Scott Smith. “I challenged three of my players before the game to start hitting and they did.”

The Balers host Leland today at 4 p.m. in a non-league contest. Hollister returns to T-CAL play Tuesday vs. Gilroy at home.
