The San Benito baseball team won its first two games of the Peninsula Easter Classic at Robert Louis Stevenson on Saturday.
“We are playing better, and we did a lot of things right in the two games,” said Haybaler coach Derek Barnes. “Overall, these were the games we have been looking for. We banged out 20 hits in the two games. We played good defense and the pitching was solid.”
In the first game against RLS, San Benito won 11-1. The Balers scored two in the first on a sacrifice fly by Karson Klauer and a double by Anthony Vasquez.
San Benito (9-9, 3-5 TCAL) added three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Vasquez, a passed ball with a runner on third and a groundout by Drew Quintana.
The Balers scored two more in the fifth inning after a Brett Fulgoni double.
In the sixth inning, Anthony Synegal drove in his third run of the day with his second double. Quintana’s fielder’s choice scored the final run, ending the game with the 10-run mercy rule.
Jason Sims got the win, going five innings and only allowing two hits.
In the second game, Independence jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a double. But that would be all the scoring off Brian Rossi, who pitched seven strong innings, scattering six hits and striking out 10.
San Benito took the lead for good in the second inning. Scott Mead hit a two-run single that scored Vasquez and Fulgoni. And Breyon Canez drove in Mead with a two-out base hit to left field.
In the third inning, Synegal doubled and moved over to third base on a fielder’s choice. Vasquez reached on an error and was knocked in with a two-run single by Rossi.
In the fifth inning, Synegal tripled and was doubled in by Brett Fulgoni.
The Balers continute play in the tournament at 4 p.m. today against Saratoga. The game will be at North Monterey County.
