Although it perhaps wasn’t expecting it, the San Benito High
baseball team wrapped up at least a share of the Tri-County
Athletic League title on Tuesday when it crushed visiting Alisal by
a 21-0 margin in Hollister. However, the win alone wasn’t enough to
lay claim to the league championship. But coupled with Palma’s 7-2
loss to Salinas on Tuesday, and San Benito, which was thinking it
was going to have to win out in order to simply earn a share of the
TCAL crown, managed to sew up its sixth straight league
championship a game early.

With TCAL title in hand and one game remaining, however, the question now becomes whether first place will be split or not. Although it has already earned at least a share, San Benito can earn the TCAL title outright on Thursday with a win over Gilroy.
A loss to Gilroy would open the door for co-league champions, between San Benito and Palma, while there is also a possibility of a three-way league champion among San Benito, Palma and Salinas, depending on what the Cowboys accomplish in their regular-season finale.
Palma’s regular season is complete, and it finishes at 14-4, while Salinas, at 13-4, has one game remaining when it will host North Salinas on Thursday.
As for the Balers, they improve to 14-3 in the TCAL, 18-7 overall, and can prevent any and all discussion of a co-league championship by defeating Gilroy on Thursday.
First pitch is 4 p.m. in Hollister.
San Benito has defeated Gilroy three straight times, 11 times in the last 12 meetings, as well as twice already this season. On April 5, the Balers made it look easy with a 17-2 victory over the Mustangs, then followed it up with a 7-2 win just two days later.
Gilroy, though, at 10-7 in the TCAL and currently holding down fourth place, will be looking for a win in order to improve upon its CCS resume.
