SALINAS –– The Hollister Indians put up 15 runs in the third inning to advance to the semifinals of the District 9 Minor Tournament of Champions.

The Indians’ 16-2 10-run mercy rule victory Tuesday unfortunately was against fellow Hollister team –the Pirates.

The Indians had all six of their hits in the third inning to brake the game open. Every player on team scored at least one run. The Indians have scored 42 runs in their three tournament games.

In the third inning, Brandon Jackson had a bases-loaded double and Sergio Cosio had a two-run triple.

Ryan Okerson had two hits and three RBIs in the inning. And Austin Wahl, who batted three times in the inning, had two hits and scored twice.

Anthony Ocampo pitched three innings, and Cody Cameron pitched the final inning.

There was some confusion at the start of the game by the Pirates who were hoping to pitch their ace pitcher but were unable to because he didn’t have enough rest between starts.

Andy Rodriguez went 1-for-2 for the Pirates, and David Achen was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles. He came in to pitch in the third inning and helped the Pirates get out of the jam and then didn’t allow a run in the fourth. Both pitcher Danny Bravo and catcher Jacob Estrada were worn out after the long third inning.

“Starting out the season, no one thought we would make TOCs,” said Pirates manager Karen Achen. “For us to make it a couple round was fantastic. We really came together as a team and supported each other whether we won or lost. It was a great bunch of kids.”
