With Shelley Donati leaving her position on San Benito High School District’s board, the remaining trustees will look at filling her vacated spot at tonight’s board meeting.

Donati announced her early resignation at the October 10 board meeting, and her term is not up until November 2008. At tonight’s meeting, the board will consider the schedule and method for selecting her replacement.

Superintendent Stan Rose said there are certain stipulations for how the selection must take place.

“Within the laws, you can do things according to the way you feel most comfortable doing,” Rose said. “The intent of the (meeting) will be to introduce the process and timeline and ask the board to approve what process they would like to follow.”

To appoint a replacement, the district must advertise the opening with local media and hold public meetings to announce the applicants. The position will be open to all registered voters in the district, and trustees’ selection will be public, Rose said.

Rose said the process for selecting a replacement board member is fairly straightforward.

“It is not unusual for a board member to not be able to complete (his or her) term,” Rose said. “It happens throughout the county and it happens throughout the state.”

North County Joint Union School District is going through the same process after Trustee Krystal Lomanto, San Benito High School’s principal, announced her resignation.

Donati’s resignation was effective October 15. Her resignation, after seven years as a trustee, was due to a new job in Phoenix.
