Dear Editor:
This is an open letter to the Board of Supervisors and the people of San Benito county.
On April 1, the Board voted to enact an ordinance which has rezoned our land in Tres Pinos from five acre zoning to 20 acre zoning. Our parcel is approximately 38 acres.
We have inherited the land from our grandmother who recently passed and have four homes on the property. As we all have grown older, we have discussed subdividing the land so each of us has our own place.
The Board’s action has taken away any possibility of that ever happening. Why?
We have row cropped our land in the past and now have leased out, long term, to a local vineyard. We pay our taxes on time. We vote. We don’t understand why this is being done to us.
We are virtually trapped on our land now. We don’t have a large enough parcel to even split it once, much less than the four times needed to divide amongst ourselves.
We don’t believe the citizens who signed the petition understood what they were getting us into.
We certainly do not believe our supervisors have done us any justice by voting this in without allowing the Farm Bureau and Cattleman’s Association a chance to educate people before deciding such a huge issue. Please, help us.
In the coming weeks, you will be asked to sign a petition to allow this issue the proper time for discussion and for the people to understand just how badly this ordinance can affect people in our county before it is cast into stone.
We were all born and raised here. We are not developers or have any great interest in seeing our county grow too fast. But this ordinance will do more harm than good.
Again, please sign the petition so more people are not needlessly hurt by this action.
